Editing Mogrts in After Effects

PreviousWhat's in the toolbox!?NextSo, now what?

Last updated 8 months ago

SubMachine is designed to make animating text easy for users in Premiere Pro. However, for users that are comfortable in After Effects, it opens the door for amazing custom animations you can integrate into our word-by-word workflow. from Premiere Gal covers a broad look at opening and tweaking MOGRTs in after effects. of our full walkthrough covers a special character: Ⓣ you can integrate into your effects to make sure they are only applied to specific phrases. An important concept to remember is that every MOGRT placed on the timeline is the same composition, so your animations need to keep in mind that the next word can sometimes come very quickly, sometimes only 3-5 frames. The best animations work even with rapid sequences of words.

To edit your subs in After Effects open your version of After Effects and go to File > Open Project.

Select your .mogrt file. You will be asked to select where you’d like to extract your new file to.

Open the Essential Graphics panel. Make sure you have the correct composition selected. Our mogrts should only include a single composition to keep things as simple as possible but others may include multiple comps.

Rename the mogrt at the top of the Essential Graphics panel where it says Name. Use something that is unique and recognisable. Do not use all caps and make sure there are no spaces at the end of the mogrt name. Renaming is a vital step. If you don’t rename your mogrt file SubMachine may not be able to identify your mogrt and is likely to select the original version instead of the new updated version.

Make any changes you’d like to the mogrt making sure to respect and maintain the Ⓣ Word Progression and Ⓣ Text Input properties.

At the bottom of the Essential Graphics panel select Export Motion Graphics Template … to export the .mogrt file to a known location.

Test the newly exported mogrt in Premiere Pro with SubMachine.
